Start from the real odds
A lottery is not an investment and it is not a plan. Over time, every lottery pays out less than it takes in — that gap is how the game funds prizes, retailers and the state. The house edge on a lottery is far larger than on almost any other regulated form of gambling.

Signs worth taking seriously
Problem gambling rarely arrives as a single dramatic moment. It usually shows up as a pattern. These are the signs that clinicians and support services consistently point to:
- Spending more than you planned. The budget keeps moving, and the new number always feels reasonable at the time.
- Chasing losses. Playing again mainly to win back what went before, rather than for the game itself.
- Borrowing to play. Using credit, an overdraft, or money meant for bills, rent or someone else.
- Hiding it. Playing more than the people close to you realise, or being vague when asked.
- It follows you around. Thinking about the next draw during work, at night, or when you are with family.
- Trying to stop and not managing it. Deciding to take a break and finding yourself playing again within days.

Tools that actually work
Willpower is the weakest of the available options. The measures below work because they take the decision out of the moment.
1Set a deposit limit before you play. Every ADM-licensed operator and every licensed EU broker is required to offer one. Set it low; you can always live with a limit that turns out to be generous, and a limit takes effect immediately while raising one usually does not.
2Use a time-out. Most platforms let you close your account temporarily, from a few days to several weeks. It is a smaller step than self-exclusion and often enough to break a run.
3Self-exclude. In Italy this runs through the Registro Unico degli Auto-esclusi (RUA), the national self-exclusion register operated under ADM. Registering blocks your access across every ADM-licensed remote gambling account at once, not just the operator you happen to be using. You can register through any licensed operator’s account or directly via ADM.
4Block payments and sites. Many banks let you switch on a gambling block on your card, and blocking software can shut off gambling sites across your devices. Both add friction at the exact moment when friction helps.
5Tell one person. Not a public announcement — one person who will ask you about it. Every service below will say the same thing, because secrecy is what lets a pattern continue.

The national gambling helpline, run by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Italy’s national institute of health. Free, anonymous, and staffed by psychologists who can also point you to services near you. Open Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 16:00.
Local treatment for gambling disorder in Italy runs through the public health service. The ISS maintains a directory of the specialist centres at usciredalgioco.iss.it. Treatment through the public system is free.
Outside Italy
- Gambling Therapy — free online support in a range of languages, available internationally. A good starting point if there is no service in your own country.
- Gamblers Anonymous — peer support groups, in person and online, with meetings in most countries.
- BeGambleAware — free advice and treatment in the United Kingdom, and a well-organised set of self-help material that is useful anywhere.
- Your own national helpline. Most European countries run one, funded publicly or by the gambling levy. Searching for your country plus “gambling helpline” will find it faster than we can list them.
If you are in immediate distress, contact your local emergency number or your doctor. A helpline is the right call for a gambling problem; it is not the right call for an emergency.

Frequently asked questions about responsible gaming
Does playing more lines improve my chances?
Proportionally, yes; meaningfully, no. Ten lines make the SuperEnalotto jackpot 1 in 62 million instead of 1 in 622 million. It also multiplies your spend by ten. The realistic effect of buying more lines is that you spend more money.
Are some numbers luckier than others?
No. Every combination has the same chance in every draw. Choosing numbers above 31 does not improve your odds, though it can mean sharing a prize with fewer people, since many players pick birthdays.
Is self-exclusion permanent?
In Italy you choose a duration when you register with the RUA, and there is also an option without an end date. A period you have chosen cannot be shortened once it has started — that is the point of it.
Can I self-exclude if I live outside Italy?
The Italian register covers ADM-licensed operators. If you play through a broker licensed elsewhere, use that operator’s own self-exclusion and the scheme in the country where it is licensed. Ask their support directly; they are obliged to offer it.
Someone close to me is gambling too much. What can I do?
Contact a helpline yourself. Every service on this page supports family members in their own right, and they can advise you on how to raise it and what to avoid — including, in most cases, paying off gambling debts, which tends to make the pattern worse rather than better.
